CANDIDATE FOR ONKAPARINGA 2022

My name is Fergus Walpole and I have been nominated as a Councillor in the upcoming Onkaparinga Council Elections for the ward of Mid Coast.

From 14th October 2022 everyone eligible to vote in these elections will receive a Postal Ballot in the mail.Fergus Walpole

It will then be necessary for you to fill in your Ballot and post it off so it’s received no later than 10th November. Please allow at least 3 days for postage.

I was born in Ireland in 1970 and when I was three years old our family let for Australia, but only made it as far as London. As the Aussie dream slowly died, we ended up settled there.
The dream didn`t die in me though, and in 2006 along with my wife Michele and our two boys we arrived in Adelaide.

After 2 weeks in a holiday rental in West Beach, we moved to a rental in Aldinga, and after 9 months there moved to Port Noarlunga South where we have been ever since.

I served an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and mason and qualifying in 1989. I then went on to qualify as a plumber at night school. For a change I trained as a driver on the underground or tube as it’s known in London, and was there for 5 years before leaving for Oz. I have been self-employed here as a bricky since 2007.

Living in Onkaparinga for 16 years now I have come to love this place and its people, and I value what we have here. I love kayaking, swimming, boogie boarding (keep threatening to upgrade to surfing), taking the dog for a walk in the bush and we love getting out to the brilliant local cafés and restaurants.

I`ve seen councillors and mayors come and go over the years and promises, promises, but I always end up scratching my head at their actions. I`m not prepared to moan about what they haven`t done for another 4 years and so I`m running for Mid Coast Ward, where I live.

I stand for REDUCING RATES by means of steering this council back to being a local administrative organization and pulling away from corporate and global style leadership. Leave politics, national and global issues to government. Let’s look after our roads, rubbish and our people like council was meant to be.

Why does it always feel like you`re never heard by the council?

I`d like to be able to bring my neighbours’ concerns to council and actually have a chance of being heard, and I think we have a great chance of electing councillors and a mayor who really want to make a difference this time and not simply be Yes men.

I have teamed up with 11 other candidates in this election who believe like I do. We are all ordinary rate payers who love their community and if we are all elected we will have every opportunity to see these changes happen.
